If your child requires medication during school hours, please contact your child’s school to talk with the school nurse or health room assistant.
An ASD Medication Authorization Form must be on file prior to administering any medication. This includes prescription, over-the-counter and homeopathic medications.

Parent/Guardian Guidelines: Medications at School
Whenever possible, medications (prescription or over-the-counter) should be given at home by a parent/guardian.
All guidelines apply to medications needed during school hours or during school-sponsored events such as athletics and clubs.

Authorization

Medication Requirements

  • Prescription meds must be in the original pharmacy-labeled container; nonprescription meds in the original manufacturer’s container.
  • Medications must be ready to administer.

Delivery and Storage

  • Parents/guardians must provide medication; children or bus drivers may not deliver.
  • Only a one-month supply should be sent to school at a time.
  • Unclaimed medication at the end of the school year will be safely disposed of.

Monitoring and Communication

  • Parents/guardians will be notified of side effects; follow-up with the prescribing professional may be needed.
  • Orders are valid until the end of the school year to include summer school, and must be renewed each school year.
  • Dosage changes require a new authorization and labeled container.

Administration at School

  • Students must come to the office at the scheduled time.
  • Staff will administer medication within a 30-minute window of the scheduled time.
  • Missed doses at home will not be given at school. If a school dose is missed, parents/guardians will be contacted.

Self-Administration

  • Must be authorized by the licensed health professional and discussed with the School Nurse.
  • The school is not responsible for tracking self-administered doses.
