The Anacortes School District is committed to an equitable system that welcomes and supports students experiencing homelessness in our community.  Students and families without access to a fixed, regular, and adequate residence are invited to contact Pat Carlson, McKinney Vento/Foster Care Liaison, ASD-AFCLiaison@asd103.org (360) 682-1614, for more information. 

 

The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that defines rights and services for children and youth experiencing homelessness. Homeless children and youth are individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. The intent of the law is to ensure that students are able to access public education with as few barriers as possible.


Students living in any of the following situations may be entitled to support:

  • In a shelter, motel, trailer park, vehicle or campground;
  • Doubled up with friends or relatives due to a loss of housing or economic hardship;
  • In an abandoned building, trailer, or other inadequate accommodation (lack of water, heat, etc.);
  • Abandoned in a hospital;
  • On the street
     

Students living in homeless situations have a right to:

  • Receive enrollment help from a district liaison or other school contact;
  • Continue to attend the school of origin or the last school attended, if feasible;
  • Receive transportation services to and from the school of origin;
  • Receive additional services for which they qualify such as English Language Learners, Special Education, Title 1, HiCap (gifted & talented), career and technical education, or preschool
