Arts and Cultural Education

The Cultural Education Program serves all students in the district and supports state and national art standards. The goal is arts enrichment and
cross-curricular learning, as well as exposure to other cultures and peoples. Students attend several performances throughout the school year.

The Walter A. Brodniak Cultural Education Award was created in 1977, upon Mr. Brodniak's retirement as Superintendent of the Anacortes School District, "to foster growth of the cultural arts in the District."

The award is given each spring to a student, faculty member, administrator, school director, community member or community organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural arts in the Anacortes School District during the current school year.  The recipient's name will be engraved on a permanent plaque and displayed at the district office.

A selection committee consisting of administrators, students, faculty and community members will evaluate the nominations for the award and recommend one nomination to the School Board.

Past winners include: Pamela Daoust, Anacortes Youth Arts, Roxann Heffelfinger, Janice Veal, Nancy Stark, Paula Clancy, Doug Dore, Phyllis Ennes, Scott Gorman, Scott Burnett, Dr. John Chambers, Tina Franulovich-Martin, Richard Mitlyng, Mike Stark, Jim Thompson, Anne Chase Stapleton, Carl Dellutri, Ian Simensen, Candice Vitale, Carole Leander, the Anacortes Arts Festival, Ajaycia Pillman and Brittaney Walkley, Sherry Chavers, and Laurie Julius-Carver, Bob Knorr, and Colleen Marinkov.
