James Yandle Named 2025 Recipient of the Walter A. Brodniak Cultural Education Award
The Anacortes School District is proud to announce James Yandle as the 2025 recipient of the Walter A. Brodniak Cultural Education Award, an honor that recognizes exceptional contributions to the cultural arts within the district.
James Yandle has served as the Brodniak Theater Manager for over two decades, and this year, his impact has been nothing short of extraordinary. In the 2024–2025 school year alone, James supported three dramatic productions, four choir concerts, four band concerts, the Nutcracker Ballet, four dance performances, multiple ASB meetings, and numerous high school and district events. His dedication and technical expertise ensured each performance ran smoothly, despite increasingly complex lighting, sound, and effects demands.
“James embodies what the Brodniak Award is all about,” said Scott Burnett, AHS drama teacher and nominator. “He is not only the most knowledgeable and reliable person in the building, he is also a gifted educator who teaches students with patience, skill, and respect. Simply put, the theater doesn’t function without him, and generations of students have grown because of his mentorship.”
Beyond his technical expertise, James co-teaches the Technical Theater class, mentoring students in lighting, sound, and stagecraft. His students not only learn the mechanics of theater production, but they also develop confidence, leadership, and collaboration skills that last a lifetime.
Reflecting on the award, James shared, “I am very thankful to work for an organization that supports the arts as much as Anacortes has throughout my education, as well as has given me a place where I can enjoy coming into work and supporting students in the performing arts. Having a theater of our size has allowed our students to have opportunities that other students have not had, and I am appreciative of the school district continuing to support our performing arts programs and organizations.”
Superintendent Dr. Justin Irish also praised James’s impact, “James’s steady presence, technical expertise, and deep commitment to students have made a lasting mark on our district’s arts programs. He represents the very best of what public education can be….passion, purpose, and care. We are proud to honor his legacy through this award.”
James will be formally recognized at the Anacortes School Board Meeting on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 6:15 PM in the Anacortes High School Library, 1600 20th Street. His name will be added to the permanent Brodniak Cultural Education Award plaque, honoring his contributions for generations to come.
