Two district administrators recently announced plans to pursue new career opportunities.

Assistant superintendent

K.C. Knudson, assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, plans to pursue work as an educational consultant and professional developer to grow his skill and broaden his reach as an equity-driven educational leader.

Knudson joined the district two years ago and has supported a wide range of district efforts including curriculum adoption, equity learning, highly capable program, school improvement and the virtual learning program developed this spring. He formerly served as middle school principal in LaConner and curriculum director in Burlington. He will stay on to support district transition efforts through the summer, as Justin Irish becomes superintendent July 1.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to have served the school community of the Anacortes School District,” said Knudson. “Together, we have begun significant work around equity and inclusion that will positively impact the educational experience of our students. I fully expect that this work will influence others in our region.”

High school principal

AHS principal Jon Ronngren leaves the district June 30 to take a position with the Mt. Vernon School District as Director of Personnel and Human Resources.

Ronngren has served the Anacortes School District as school counselor, Career and Technical Education director, assistant principal, and for the past nine years, AHS principal. He helped lead the high school through its recent renovation and reconstruction project. His tenure included increased graduation rates, an initiative to support social-emotional learning and a focus on equity and inclusion. AHS has been recognized repeatedly for its overall achievement in annual rankings by US News magazine.

“I have loved serving the students and families of Anacortes,” said Ronngren. “We have done great work together, built a state-of-the-art high school, and set our students up for success in any pathway they choose. I’m grateful to the staff, students and families for all their hard work and support over the years.”

Superintendent Mark Wenzel said both leaders have made significant contributions to student success.

“K.C. Knudson and Jon Ronngren both place a deep value in supporting all students to reach their potential,” he said. “Their level of care and commitment has led to significant growth, both at the high school and across the district. I’m grateful to them for their dedication and their belief in every single student who walks through our doors.”

The district will conduct open searches for both positions in the next month, with stakeholders involved in the process.

“These are important leadership positions that the district will be quite deliberate in filling,” said Wenzel.
