The Anacortes School Board of Directors recently adopted resolutions to place two levies on the ballot on February 13, 2018 to maintain support for local schools. Both measures are replacement levies, taking the place of expiring levies approved by voters in 2014.

The Replacement Educational Programs and Operations Levy will provide support for educational programs not covered by state funding. This includes funding for certain teaching positions, nursing, mental health, transportation, extra-curricular activities, and maintenance and operations.

The Safety and Technology levy continues the district’s digital conversion by authorizing the purchase of computers, software, online resources, and offering staff training. This levy also includes safety improvements across all schools.

Together the ballot measures total about $9.6 million in 2019. Property owners will pay an estimated $1.60 per $1,000 valuation. A $400,000 homeowner will pay about $80 less in annual taxes for the local levies.

Local levies provide resources to allow Anacortes to remain competitive with the best districts in the northwest, says Superintendent Mark Wenzel.

“We just completed a new, five-year strategic plan that sets ambitious growth goals for student success, while continuing our commitment to a well-rounded education,” said Wenzel. “Local support is vital to help us achieve these goals. We deeply appreciate how committed this community is to the highest quality of public education.”

In 2017, the district ranked first of 32 districts in northwest Washington, based on state assessment scores across grade levels and subject areas. US News magazine also ranked Anacortes High School among the top high schools in the state in 2017, based on state assessments, graduation rates and student participation and performance in Advanced Placement courses.
