Members of Anacortes School Board

Anacortes School Board director Karl Yost has announced his resignation from the school board, effective March 21. The board will formally consider Yost’s resignation at their January 24 board meeting. Yost is leaving the board to devote more time to his work and other pursuits. As a water and waste remediation construction consultant, his time and travel commitments with new environmental treatment technologies have grown in recent months. Yost also looks forward to spending more time with his wife Karen, his children and grandchildren.

Yost has served on the board since December 2009, when he was elected to a two-year term to fill the vacancy left by Chris Anderson. He was subsequently re-elected to two additional terms.

“I am extremely grateful to the Anacortes voters for allowing me to serve our students and community these past years,” said Yost. “My work is demanding more attention, and I feel that someone else will want to be of committed cheerful service in the education of our youth. I truly hope that whoever fills the position will do so because they care, but also that they will realize the sense of important purpose and pleasure that I most certainly did. The Anacortes School District has been a wonderful place where I was so fortunately engaged!”

Yost has served as legislative committee representative, WIAA representative, and most recently as the board’s liaison for the high school construction project.

“We have been incredibly lucky and grateful for Karl’s expertise in construction and project management,” said board president Bobbilyn Hogge. “He has helped serve as a conduit of information between the district and the board, helping us all understand the various details of the high school project better.”

Superintendent Mark Wenzel lauded Yost’s focus on children and their well-being.

“Karl is truly a champion for our kids,” he said. “He challenges us to think deeply about who is not being successful in our system, and how we can do things differently to make sure all students meet their potential.”

Appointment Process

The board will appoint someone to fill the remainder of Yost’s term, which ends in November, 2019. The board is accepting applications now. Applications can be found online or at the District Office, and are due by February 15. The newly appointed board member will be sworn in at the March 21 school board meeting.

The appointee may or may not choose to run for election in November. Filing week for the November, 2019 election is May 13-17, 2019. More information on local elections can be found on the Skagit County Auditor’s website.

The district and board will hold an informational meeting for anyone interested in applying, or running, for school board on January 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the District Office, 2200 M Avenue.

More information on the appointment process can be found on the district's website
