School Board and Superintendent

The Anacortes School Board is committed to furthering the mission and vision of the district, by setting policy and ensuring sound fiscal oversight so that all students rise to their fullest potential, embrace the future, and make a difference.

The five-member school board is also committed to open, fair, and transparent governance and invites community feedback. Did you know that school board meetings, including site visits and study sessions, are open to the public?

The school board meets regularly a few times a month, and throughout the year - including summer.

Site visits:

The board visits each of our 7 schools throughout the school year to hear an update on student achievement, gap closing measures, and progress toward each school’s improvement plan. Following a report from the principal, the board visits classrooms to watch students and teachers in action. These meetings typically take place on the first Thursday of the month from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

Study sessions:

Prior to the evening board meeting, the board holds a study session to discuss items in more depth and detail. Meetings include presentations from staff and provide an opportunity for the board, and student board members, to ask questions and provide input on key district initiatives. No decisions can be made in a study session. The district will now hold the study sessions at the district office, rather than the high school to allow for easier access for both staff and the community. These meetings typically take place on the third Thursday of the month from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m.

Evening business meetings:

Evening business meetings are where the board conducts its regular business and votes on items before them. These meetings include a public comment period, student representative presentations, staff reports, board reports, financial updates, and other items requiring action by the school board. These meetings typically take place on the third Thursday of the month at 6:15 p.m. in the Anacortes High School library.

Other meetings:

Occasionally the board needs to hold other meetings to conduct their business: special meetings, including those with executive sessions, and exempt meetings are a few examples. Executive sessions and exempt meetings are closed to the public, and must meet strict legal circumstances for the board to hold one of these meetings. There are eight circumstances that a school board can meet for executive session (RCW 42.30.110). Exempt meetings are exempt from the Open Public Meetings Act, and are held for the purposes of discussing collective bargaining and grievances, amongst other specific matters (RCW 42.30.140).

In addition to state law, the board follows the standards set forth by the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA). More information on board standards, open public meetings, and board policy can be found on their website: www.wssda.org.
