Join us in recognizing the achievements of our school bus drivers and transportation staff during National School Bus Safety Week October 19-23, 2020. During the coronavirus pandemic, our transportation staff continue to provide vital services, currently transporting a limited number of students to in-person learning, and ensuring the health and safety of our students while on the bus.

This year’s theme is “Red Lights Mean Stop!” As a reminder, drivers must stop for buses with red lights flashing and/or stop paddles extended -- it’s the law.

Superintendent Justin Irish recognized our transportation staff with a proclamation at this week's school board meeting.

"I am so grateful for the care and dedication that our transportation staff bring to their jobs every day," said Irish.

Our transportation staff continue to prepare for more students to return to limited in-person learning in November. District transportation is available to any enrolled student that needs it.

It’s important to remind students of important safety tips when riding the school bus:

  • Make sure children leave home on time so they can arrive at the bus stop before it is due, ideally at least five minutes early. Running after or in front of a bus is dangerous.

  • Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage children to walk in groups.

  • Practice good pedestrian behavior: walk on the sidewalk, and if there is no sidewalk stay out of the street.

  • Stop and look left, right and then left again if you must cross the street.

  • Have children wait in a location where the driver can see them while driving down the street.

  • Remind children to look to the right before they step off the bus.

  • If you meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side where the child will be dropped off, not across the street. Children can be so excited to see you after school that they dash across the street and forget the safety rules.

The district will be featuring some of our transportation staff on our Facebook Page throughout the week. Please join us in thanking all of them for their hard work and dedication to the safety of our students.
