The Anacortes School Board voted unanimously to approve the district’s 2020-2021 budget on Thursday, August 27, 2020. The $40.5 million budget reflects a slight reduction based on student enrollment, although the district anticipates further reductions based on program cuts, declining enrollment, and reduced need for staffing as the district grapples with the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2020-21 budget also reflects a significant investment in personnel, with 86 percent of the budget allocated for personnel costs.

“Our commitment to our students and our staff remain strong, even in these challenging times,” said Superintendent Justin Irish. “We are assessing our needs based on our actual count numbers and will make adjustments to programs and staffing later this fall. These are tough decisions and we don’t take any of these decisions lightly.”

The district made several cost-saving measures earlier this year, including not replacing certain senior leadership positions at the same level. District administrators and supervisors have also agreed to furlough days.

The adopted budget maintains the district’s commitment to the social-emotional health of our students, with a continued investment in the RULER program at our elementary and middle schools and Character Strong at the high school. The district is also continuing its investment in mental health support, by maintaining our mental health counselors. The budget also invests in curriculum, including new online platforms to effectively engage students in a remote learning model. In particular, our new math and English Language Arts curriculum enhance both remote and in-person learning.

“This budget reflects our ongoing commitment to support the whole child, providing for their social-emotional health as well as rigorous academic standards,” said Board President Bobbilyn Hogge. “We have some tough decisions ahead, but we believe this budget reflects sound fiscal stewardship of our limited resources.”
