Superintendent's Welcome
Welcome to your Anacortes Public Schools. As a former coach, teacher, Principal and now as your Superintendent with over twenty years in the Anacortes School District, I share your pride in our schools and the commitment to making them even better.
We value your support and never forget that our community and parents trust us with their most valued asset, their children, and expect us to mold each and every one of them into productive and compassionate citizens. An incredible challenge, but one with staff, parents and community working together, we can achieve.
Over the last year and half our District has developed a new four-year strategic plan called “Charting a Course to Excellence” with three readiness themes designed to ensure our students are School Ready, Transition Ready and College Ready. Each theme hasspecific gauges or assessments to determine the district’s progress toward the overall goal of ninety percent of our students achieving these readiness goals. Ambitious? Yes, but if any community can reach these breakthrough goals, it is Anacortes.
The following are a sample of our work priorities as they relate to our readiness themes:
School Ready
- Develop, refine and implement a Comprehensive School Readiness Program and Early Childhood Center
- Implement strategies and tasks described in year one of our four-year action plan, including the development of a birth-to-six readiness program for parents and preschools.
Transition Ready
- Refine and implement programs, strategies and actions to ensure students make successful transitions to middle school, high school and post secondary programs
- Implement strategies and tasks described in year one of our four-year action plan, including High Schools That Work recommendations, Math action plan recommendations, transitional programs i.e., Link Crew for incoming 9th graders, etc
- Activate District Dashboard gauges (assessments) designed to measure the District’s progress towards the goal of 90% of our students making successful transitions to middle school, high school and post secondary programs.
College Ready
- Develop, refine and implement programs to ensure student’s graduate college ready
- Implement strategies and tasks described in year one of our four-year action plan, including High Schools That Work recommendations, increased Advance Placement course offerings and Math action plan recommendations
- Activate District Dashboard gauges (assessments) designed to measure District’s progress towards the goal of 90% of our student graduating college ready.
Please don’t just sit back and watch our progress towards these themes; instead roll up your sleeves and join us in this incredible journey. Our District’s vision is to be a Lighthouse for Public Education in our Community. I sincerely believe that within a few years our District can be a Beacon for What’s Best in Public Education as our staff and community partner to create world class learning environments. While Anacortes schools have a legacy of educational excellence, the future can be even brighter, but only if it is a collaborative future. We welcome your support.
If you would like to assist in this extraordinary mission, please call me at 293-1210 or e-mail me at cborgen@asd103.org. Your skills, insights and contributions are needed and appreciated. In addition, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have concerns or questions. As our teachers remind our students; “You can’t learn from your mistakes, if you don’t know what they are.”
Our schools belong to the public. Let us never rest until every child graduates with the skills to thrive as contributing and compassionate citizens.
Go Seahawks!
Sincerely,
Chris Borgen
Superintendent.
