The Anacortes School Board approved its 2018-19 budget on Thursday, August 23, highlighting the district’s focus on staff training, mental health, and teacher collaboration.

The $39.4 million budget includes a considerable investment in people, with more than 84 percent of the budget allocated for personnel costs.

The district framed its budget around the five pillars in the Strategic Plan: Quality Instruction & Curriculum, Partnerships, Social-Emotional Learning, Equity, and Stewardship.

“A major focus for the year will be social-emotional learning and mental health supports for our students,” said Superintendent Mark Wenzel, who noted a new social-emotional program at the elementary and middle schools as well as a grant-funded social worker in grades 9-12.

The budget also calls for continued professional learning with instructional coaches, teacher collaborative time and technology tools to enhance student learning.

“We’re grateful to the community for the ongoing support of Anacortes schools,” said Wenzel. “This budget represents a core value of excellence for all students.”
