The Anacortes School Board rated Superintendent Mark Wenzel “distinguished” in his performance evaluation for the 2017-2018 school year. The superintendent’s rating represents an evaluation of district performance in each of five pillars in the strategic plan.

The pillars are: Quality Instruction and Curriculum, Partnerships, Social-Emotional Learning, Equity, and Stewardship. Each pillar includes annual goals for the year that drive and focus the work of the district.

Accomplishments for the 2017-18 school year include:

  • Teacher collaboration and staff development that narrowed student achievement gaps
  • Superb management of the high school construction project that is proceeding on schedule and on budget
  • Successful completion of two elementary roofs in summer 2018
  • The adoption of a social-emotional learning program to be implemented in 2018-2019
  • An increase in technology integration to support deeper learning and student engagement
  • The passage of an operations levy and technology levy with 65 percent voter support, one of the highest totals in the state
  • Substantial, consistent and transparent communications including district publications, social media, videos, community presentations, and student and family surveys
  • Effective hiring of highly qualified staff
  • Clean state audit

Board members commended Wenzel for successfully carrying out the vision of the strategic plan. The vision states: “Anacortes students rise to their fullest potential, embrace the future, and make a difference.”

“This year marked the first year of our new strategic plan, and the district has made great strides toward its goals,” said board president Bobbilyn Hogge. “The plan captures the community’s values and expectations and our district’s commitment to continue to grow in supporting all students over the next several years. Based on positive results in each area, Dr. Wenzel did an excellent job leading the work.”

Wenzel expressed gratitude for the commitment of staff across schools, as well as the community’s support for students.

“We have an outstanding staff who are dedicated to learning and growing as professionals,” he said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see them in action -- and to see the lengths they go to support kids. We also have unparalleled community support for children. The depth of care and connection between our schools and Anacortes residents is just amazing. It’s what makes this such a special district.”

Wenzel recently completed his fifth year as superintendent in Anacortes. Board directors and the superintendent met July 11 and 12 to review the superintendent's evaluation and set goals for 2018-2019.
