Volunteers Martha Harper, Elizabeth Braatz and Addi Garner

The Anacortes School District recognized volunteers and community members for their generosity and support of schools at its second annual community celebration breakfast on April 18.

Martha Harper was named the district’s Volunteer of the Year. Harper was selected from 18 nominees who have made significant impacts in the district. Harper was nominated by Mt. Erie Principal Peter Donaldson, who described her as caring, quiet and patient. She has a special gift for befriending lonely and marginalized students to make a difference in their lives.

Elizabeth Braatz and Addi Garner were named the district’s Student Volunteers of the Year. Anacortes High School seniors, Braatz and Garner were recognized in particular for their focus on social justice, inclusivity, and equity. Braatz is a member of AVID, Key Club and the Activist Student Union. She volunteers for the Arts Festival and A Simple Gesture Food Bank. Garner founded the Gay-Straight Alliance at Anacortes High School to create a safe and supportive space for all students. She volunteers at many local organizations, including the Kiwanis Shop and Seattle Children’s Hospital.

The breakfast also included recognition for volunteers who have given more than 200 hours of service to the district, local service groups who contribute financially to the district, and other community supporters. The breakfast was sponsored by FORMA Construction and Hutteball and Oremus Architecture, who are building the new high school.
