Anacortes Superintendent Mark Wenzel has appointed Whitney principal Kevin Schwartz as the new principal for Mt. Erie Elementary, taking over from Peter Donaldson who is leaving the district at the end of the 2017-18 school year. Schwartz was selected after careful deliberation by Wenzel. This recommendation will go to the school board for official approval on March 22.

“Kevin has proven himself as a strong leader in our district,” said Wenzel. “His experience as Whitney’s principal for the past 12 years, as well as serving as a part-time administrator at both the high school and middle school has given him a wide breadth of knowledge that will serve Mt. Erie well in this transition.”

As part of the deliberation process, the district asked staff and parents what they were looking for in a new leader. Highlights of their feedback included:

  • A leader who values student voice

  • Strong support for staff

  • Clear communicator

Much of the feedback was appreciative of Donaldson’s leadership and support, while seeing the opportunity for a renewed vision and energy. Schwartz echoed this sentiment in responding to why he wanted this position.

“This is a great opportunity to revitalize the culture and bring a new level of enthusiasm and collaboration to an already high functioning staff,” said Schwartz.

The district will work with Schwartz and Donaldson on a transition plan over the next few months. The district will also work on a plan to replace Schwartz as principal at Whitney.
