Teacher Appreciation Week
On behalf of the Anacortes School Board and myself, please join me in thanking and honoring our extraordinary teaching staff. Their professional skills, industriousness and efficacy continue to make profound and positive impact in the academic, behavioral and emotional lives of our community’s children.
While the Board and I salute our teaching staff, please know our community does as well. We recently finished a comprehensive listening campaign designed to help Chart a New Course to Excellence and the creation of a new Strategic Plan. Over fourteen different listening groups were conducted, plus on-line survey data collected around the Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) to our schools. The summary findings were very consistent with each of the listening groups. When it comes to the strengths of our school district: our teaching staff is clearly number one in our community’s eyes:
Top Five Anacortes School District’s Strengths
- High quality dedicated staff providing continuity of instruction to students
- Nurturing student focused environment
- Community connections and support
- Rigorous academic program, involving high academic standards and expectations
- Personable and approachable culture
Our Anacortes community clearly knows their teachers are top notch and they are appreciative of your hard work on behalf of their students.
Again, thank you for the profound work that you do.
Chris Borgen

AHS Math Team Competes at StateThree students from AHS qualified to compete this year in the Washington State Math Council’s annual state contest in Yakima (mid April). The two-person team of Sarai Gould (12th) and Adam Dunlap (11th) placed 13th overall in the Topical Team Event. Meanwhile, 9th grader Chaelee Dalton finished in 1st place among all freshmen at the contest who competed in the Topical Individual Event!
Fidalgo School - 2011 Achievement Award WinnerCongratulations to Fidalgo School, a 2011 Achievement Award Winner for Academic Excellence. In 2009 a law charged the State Board of Education with creating a tool for measuring schools to provide feedback for schools and districts to self-assess their progress, and also to identify schools with exemplary student performance. The Academic Achievement Index probes deeper than just, How many students met standard? It takes into consideration other indicators of achievement, such as, How many students are making marked improvement even if they haven’t met standard? And, What progress is the school making towards closing the achievement gap? This is the third year in a row that Fidalgo Elementary School has earned the Washington State Academic Achievement Award in the category of Academic Excellence. The Academic Excellence Award is given to the top 5% of Washington state schools. Additionally, in 2009 Fidalgo Elementary also received the award in an additional category: Exemplary in Language Arts. |
